We are introducing a monthly webinars series sharing retail industry knowledge and our data insights on consumer shopping habits from around the globe. The first webinar dived into the topic of The Store of the Future, led by our CEO, Georgia Nelson, and Chief Data Officer, Gareth Johns. 

During this webinar and discussion, Nelson and Johns tackled the questions, what do consumers value most from their shopping experience, and how to truly navigate the quickly changing expectations of the consumer? The answer to these questions lies in the current research collected from over 1 million consumers and over 1 billion data points. This research was also presented to the Retail Week Live audience and published by their committee. 

“I spoke at Retail Week Live in the UK towards the end of last year on the trends we had seen across consumer shopping behavior across North America, Australia, and New Zealand,” said Georgia Nelson, TruRating CEO, and Founder. “During the last couple of years, through covid, we heard from over 40 million consumers – and were speaking daily with our retail customers.”

By simply asking the consumers, we discovered that during COVID over 85% of consumers across our markets wanted to get back into the physical store and 5% said that they thought buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) would be a permanent move. After this, we took it a step further to ask in-store shoppers and online shoppers, ‘What is best about shopping in stores?’ and ‘What is best about shopping online?’.

RESULTS:

When shopping in-store, consumers value staff advice, whereas shopping online the consumers value convivence. We are seeing that new retail technologies are finding ways to bring the benefits of each shopping channel to the other to create a type of hybrid experience. Such as chatting to a store associate while shopping online or ordering an item to be shipped to your home while you are in-store.
